Because there are so many Tolkien fan sites, how do you know which ones provide good information? The articles at Wikipedia and the Encyclopeia of Arda are terrible. You have to be careful about whose vision of Middle-earth to trust because some "fans" actually try to describe Middle-earth in their own terms. This is Tolkien's world and we should respect it. Just so NO to "fan" sites that distort the truth about Middle-earth. Here are some of the better, more authoritative sites about Middle-earth.
- Tolkien Essays by Michael Martinez
Michael Martinez is one of the most widely read and respected authors in the Tolkien community. Although he has been the victim of an Internet smear campaign for several years his work is exceptional: well researched, well considered, and very well written. MERP has the largest archive of Martinez' essays.
- Middle-earth essays from The World of Middle-earth
SF-Worlds is an older science fiction fan site with several dedicated sections about large science fiction and fantasy franchise worlds. Their Middle-earth section is a little old-fashioned but very well-written and researched.
- Tolkien Essays in Parma Endorion
Parma Endorion is the free eBook that Michael Martinez wrote years ago. It has been downloaded by more than 1,000,000 Tolkien fans around the world (and translated into Spanish, Italian, and Polish). This eBook (in Adobe Acrobat format) includes pictures by fan artists Rich Sullivan and Anke Eissmann.
- Tolkien Essays
This J.R.R. Tolkien fan site has essays about Tolkien's mythologies, Balrogs, and the Tolkien canon.
- The truth about Balrogs
This fan site has information about Balrogs and discusses the tiresome Balrog Wings Controversy briefly. It also has resources to help you find Tolkien essays, forums, and research materials online.
- J.R.R. Tolkien and Middle-earth
Nice collection of short essays about J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth. Topics focus on the books The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, and Unfinished Tales. Very well done.
