Guillermo del Toro will be directing two movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. The films are expected to be released the months of December 2012 and December 2013. Tolkien fans are excited and interested in learning how the film industry will treat his work again. There has not been a film or television production based on The Hobbit since 1977, when the Rankin/Bass animation studio released a television special based on the book. The Rankin/Bass production has been beloved and bashed by generations of Tolkien and animation fans.
